A highly searched term on YouTube is “falsetto,” most likely due to its elusive meaning and conflicting information regarding the term itself. The proper use of the term “falsetto” is for a male’s voice when singing in “head voice.” Whether this term is reserved just for men is irrelevant because it really boils down to the placement of the sound. So let’s dive in on how to find your falsetto aka head voice.

The Location

When singing in your head voice, you will feel the resonance in the upper portion or mask area of your head. The exact placement will depend on your anatomy, but you will feel it anywhere from your nasal passages up into your forehead.

How to Get There

To allow your voice to get up to the proper location, you want to create a lot of space while singing. Doing things like raising your eyebrows or dropping off consonants will help play up the space to create that higher, lighter, and brighter sound you’re wanting.

Do Try This At Home

Practice makes awesome. As you work your way up the scale, have fun flipping from your chest voice to your head voice creating a dramatic contrast between registers. As you do the exercise, be sure to maintain good technique throughout, keeping your jaw dropped and isolated with plenty of space and support on the low end to ready you for the upper end.
