There is only one Beyonce, there is only one Ariana Grande, and there is only one YOU. It’s important as a singer to avoid imitation and to find your own unique voice and vocal sound. Here’s how to do it…

Step 1 – Stop Imitating

It can be easier said than done, but in order to find your own unique vocal sound, you have to ensure you’re not simply performing an impression of your favorite artist or singer. Everyone has their own unique sound, pitch, tone and accent and it’s important that you find yours. Recording yourself and listening back is a great way to get a clear perspective as to whether or not you’re stuck in the habit of copying someone else.

Step 2 – Record Yourself

The only way to get a clear perspective on your vocal sound is to record yourself and to listen back. Don’t be too hard on yourself, but use this as an opportunity to hear yourself clearly from an outside perspective. Pay attention to your tone, your inflection and the overall sound of your voice until you feel like it’s really YOU.

Step 3 – Take Risks & Get Creative

Taking risks and getting creative doesn’t necessarily mean you have to perform crazy riffs and runs, but it does mean doing something stylistically that is a bit unique. If you’re performing a cover song, do your best to make it your own! When the original artist performs a run, perform a run that fits your voice and style instead of copying the exact run every time. Drag out certain notes, cut other notes short, mix up your timing a bit or anything else you can do that makes your performance unique.
