Unfortunately, we have all probably suffered from body dysmorphia at one time or another. This is when we hyper-focus on a perceived flaw in our appearance leading to feelings of shame and embarrassment. When it comes to singing, many suffer from vocal dysmorphia or the inability to appreciate one’s own positive vocal attributes due to the chronic comparison to others. Now is the time to silence the bully in our minds and to start taking control of our thoughts by doing this one exercise.

Start With One

Sit down with a pen and paper and think about one thing you like, or even love, about your voice. This can be an uncomfortable process, but if you’re going to own your flaws, it’s time for you to start owning your goodness.

Once you have decided on your one word, physically write it down. Now choose a simple or familiar song to sing, and as you sing it, focus only on that one word you wrote down. Really lean into that attribute, emphasizing it throughout the song.

Stack It Up

As you focus on your one loving vocal quality, you may find other attributes or techniques starting to shine through now that you’re relaxed and having fun. Write down these new discoveries along with your original word so you can keep adding them into other songs.

Pro tip: Be sure to record yourself when singing because you will probably forget some things you did while playing around with the melody of the song.

We are our own worst critics which is why you should work with a professional to identify the areas of your voice that shine and where you can improve in order to take your voice to the next level.
